GP settles in clinical negligence case

A doctor has agreed a settlement in a case of alleged clinical negligence.

Nicola Lang was awarded £3.3 million in compensation after it was ruled that her daughter was adversely affected by a two-day delay in her referral to hospital with meningitis.

Caitlyn Lang now has cerebral palsy - a condition which affects movement and coordination - and has profound learning difficulties.

According to her mother, Caitlyn was taken to an out-of-hours GP service in the Vale of Glamorgan eight years ago and was diagnosed with gastric flu.

The doctor sent her home and instructed Ms Lang to give her Calpol.

However, two days later, she was taken to hospital and was diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis.
Ms Lang was warned that her daughter could be brain damaged when she recovered but Caitlyn's cerebral palsy was not diagnosed until she was one year old.

During a hearing it was confirmed that the youngster would have gone on to lead a normal life if she had received the treatment she needed when her symptoms were first spotted.
