Hospital admits 'childbirth blunder'

An NHS trust has admitted liability for mistakes in antenatal care that led to a baby being born with quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

The Worcester News reported that the family of Holly Nixon - now aged five - will receive compensation for the mistakes, which starved her of oxygen at birth.

A medical negligence specialist asserted that as a result of her condition, Holly will likely need 24-hour care for her entire life.

It is thought the settlement sum could total seven figures, but will not be confirmed until a hearing is held in 2009.

"We are pleased that the court has approved the liability settlement agreed between the parties in respect of the circumstances surrounding the birth of Holly Nixon,” said a spokesman for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

According to UK disability group Scope, cerebral palsy currently affects around one in every 400 children born in the UK.
