Pleural plaques compensation ruling 'to be made soon'
Added (2009-Feb-15)
A ruling concerning the right of people with pleural plaques to seek compensation is to be made soon.
This is according to comments made by Gordon Brown during a recent parliamentary exchange.
Labour MP Michael Clapham pointed out to the prime minister that it has been nearly 18 months since the Law Lords made a decision which denied sufferers of the condition the right to pursue payouts.
Responding to the comments, Mr Brown said that it is "very important" that a resolution on pleural plaques is reached in the near future.
He added: "The secretary for justice has been looking at this matter and talking with his colleagues right across government about the implications of what we can do and I can assure you there will be an announcement very soon."
An indication of previous exposure to asbestos, pleural plaques are a form of scarring of the outer lining of the lung.
