Settlement reached

A man has reached an out-of-court settlement with a health board after suffering complications over a vasectomy operation.

According to reports in the Aberdeen Press and Journal, father-of-eight James Malcolm claimed to have suffered "extreme pain, injury and distress" as a result of the surgical procedure.

According to court papers supporting his action, the self-employed hill farmer and fencer had the operation at Belford Hospital, which is located in Fort William and was built in 1963.

The procedure was carried out by consultant surgeon John Cumming.

Despite a nurse noticing bleeding and swelling around the wound, Mr Malcolm was discharged later that day.

Later the same month, he had to be readmitted to hospital and have further surgery to stem the bleeding.

Mr Malcom's legal team argued that he had not been fully informed as to the possible complications of vasectomy operations.

It was also claimed that he should have been kept in hospital longer or readmitted sooner after the bleeding was noticed.

The compensation settlement is due to be finalised in March.
